For a recent project me and a partner were given the colour pink and we had to create our own mood boards on expected and overdone things about the colour and things which we felt were unexpected and relevant to the colour pinks. The end result was ‘Over It’ and ‘Love It’ mood boards.
For my ‘over it’ board I focused on all the stereotypical things associated with the colour pink, such as gender roles, romance and innocence. I felt that these had all been overdone and were all things that I didn’t like about the colour pink. For my ‘love it’ board I looked at how pink can be seen as powerful. I linked this to feminism, and ‘Baker Miller Pink’ which has a calming effect on people. I also looked to the 1980s power dressing and bright fuchsia trend popular at the time, to portray how women’s power in the workplace and society was reflected within the clothes and colours they wore. I also researched pink buildings as I think they are unexpected and give a sense of hope to passers by. Finally I stumbled across a group of women in India known as the Gulabi Gang, who fight against physical and emotional abuse against women, working for justice for these women. While doing this amazing work the women all wear pink saris and a book has even been published named ‘The Pink Sari Revolution’, I think this highlights just how powerful the colour pink can be.

After producing these mood boards we were told to create a photoshoot and video presenting a message using pink in some way. At first me and my partner found it hard to think of what it was we wanted to focus on, however after bringing together our ideas we decided we would focus on the idea of breaking stereotypes surrounding women’s weakness and pink. We agreed we would have two models and pink balloons with words associated with women’s stereotypical weaknesses. The video would then be the models popping the balloons disregarding the stereotypes and accepting pink as a powerful symbol, not a weak one.

Once we had created this photoshoot we were then told to edit the photos how we wanted and use the power of text to change the meaning of the photos to present:
*A piece of positive advertising
*An album cover
*Critical journalism
*A parody/ graffiti piece
These are my final photos after being edited and text added. I found this task quite hard as it was hard to see how I could change the photos meaning after I had been so focused of getting across the message of female empowerment within the photos, however It really did make me realise the power of words.
